Don’t Be Such a Scientist: Talking Substance in an Age of Style

By Olson, Randy

(Full review in STC Techcomm Vol. 66, No. 1)

This an excellent book for anyone faced with the sometimes daunting task of translating what subject matter experts know into something that will engage and inform a non-specialist audience. With both humor and humility, Olson tells how, frustrated with the failure of science to make itself heard on subjects like global warming, he abandoned a tenured university position as a biologist to study improvisational acting and become an award-winning maker of science documentaries. Along the way, he teaches the reader how to apply what he learned about marrying the scientist’s quest for accuracy with Hollywood’s skills at telling engaging stories.
